Definite Articles: Monday, January 19
The articles sticking with me this week all have to do with the invasion of the Twin Cities by the Acronym Army (ICE, DHS, CBP).
I have roots in the Twin Cities, and traveled there monthly for years to see my oldest two kids. The crisis hit me very hard when I saw a viral video of a man being dragged out of his smashed car window at a Shell station on Portland and Snelling, a mile or so from my oldest son's high school and across the street from the Cheapo Records at which I often dig for used records.
Here are some articles that moved me this week:
"A week in photos: Renee Good’s killing sparks grief and pushback in Minneapolis," Alberto Villafan (Sahan Journal)
"In Photos: One Week Since the Shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis," Leah Feiger and Paloma Shutes (Wired)
"With the Twin Cities Under Siege, Restaurants Become Hubs of Solidarity," Em Cassel (Racket News)
"Rapid Response Networks in the Twin Cities: A Guide to an Updated Model," CrimethInc.com
"Ways to Support Minnesota’s Immigrant Communities as ICE Activity Escalates," Justine Jones (Mpls.St.Paul Magazine)
"I’m a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here’s how ICE observers are helping," by Nicole Bedera (MS Now)
"In Minneapolis, I Glimpsed a Civil War," by Lydia Polgreen (New York Times)
